I knew Roy from a personal point of view before i knew him as a firefighter. Roy was one of the most compassionate and caring guys that i have known. Roy was one of my best friends. I was a member at elkton when he first joined mcgaheysville, and i got to hear all of the stories about everything that he had done while at the firehouse. Roy wanted to make a career out of being a firefighter. He was very passionate about volunteering and it was in the line of going to help someone else that he lost his life. He was very dedicated to mvfd and he loved what he did and he spent every second of free time that he had helping others and being at the firehouse. Roy will be greatly missed by everyone and my condolences go out to the smith family and to the brothers and sisters of mvfd. Roy is at home with the lord now and he lived a wonderful life.

I just wanted to take a minute to say how sorry I am for your loss. As an instructor I teach every student that the dangers of the Fire and EMS Service are not always while they are on the call but while enroute as well. My deepest sympathy to the McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Company and the Smith Family. I am sure God's angels have taken him into their wings and he has taken his place in heaven to watch over the rest of his family and his brothers and sisters in Public Safety. May his spirit watch over all of us while we continue the work that he loved and to which he was so dedicated!!

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!!

Location: Rockingham Co/McGaheysville/Merck
Comments:

Roy obviously knew what it took to be a firefighter. How a job that requires so much and asks for so little in return could be so rewarding. He had the selflessness, enthusiasum and desire to help others that few kids his age exhibit. It's being associated with those like Roy that make me proud to be part of this brotherhood. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those that you touched around you. Rest peaceably in the arms of GOD Firefighter Smith. You are a true hero to all of us.

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friend" (John 15:13) and to lay down one's life for those he know's not, is even greater.

Comments:

Words can not describe the pain and anger that both the family and the department feel right now. What little time I was around him while I was working part time for the county. I knew that Roy had a good head on his shoulders and was going to make a great firefighter. Roy will be missed but never forgotten. He will be looking down on his family and Co. 80 watching and loving his family and what he loved. The thoughts and prayers from myself and WFD are with the Smith family and his extended family at the fire house.

Co. 80 and the Smith Family The Last Alarm

My father was a fireman, he drove a big red truck
And when he'd go to work each day he'd say "Mother, wish me luck"
Then dad would not come home again until sometime the next day
But the thing that bothered me the most was the things some folks would say
A fireman's life is easy, he eats and sleeps and plays,
and sometimes he won't fight a fire for many, many days
When I first heard these words I was young to understand
But I knew when people had trouble Dad was there to lend a hand

Then my father went to work one day and kissed us all goodbye
but little did we realize that night we all would cry
My father lost his life that night when the floor gave way below
And I wondered why he'd risked his life for someone he did not know
But now I truly realize the greatest gift a man can give
is to lay his life upon the line so that someone else might live
so as we go from day to day and pray to God above
Say a prayer for your local fireman
He may save the ones you love Our Deepest Sympathies,

The Cook Family Billy, Ashley and Tyler. Woodstock Vol. Fire Dept. and Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue FF/EMT

Our Deepest Sympathy and prayers go out to your Department and the Smith Family in the tragic loss of one of our brothers and a son to others. This is not only a time of mourning but a time that we all must reflect back on the joyous times and what this young teen has accomplished in his short life. Also, we must take this incident and use it to remind each of us of how important it is to not get tunnel vision and be sure we get to each call in a safe manner. God Bless MVFC and the family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family and Roy's extended family at our fire station. Roy was a dedicated young man and an asset to the company. Roy could have done numerous things at his age with his spare time, but chose to volunteer and help others. I think Roy left this place doing what he enjoyed and I think that is very honorable. I know Roy's family is proud to have raised a young man so caring and respectful. I will miss Roy and he will be missed by many others.

I would like to thank Everyone for their hospitality and kindness during the loss of my son. It means so much to know that Roy was cared for so much by the members of the MVFD, Students, Friends, and Family. I am very proud of the young man Roy was and the man he was going to be. No one will ever know just how much Roy was loved and how much he will be missed.
