On January 26, 2008, my husband, Steve, collapsed in Le Club at Massanutten Resort after playing racquetball with my son, Ben. Steve had no significant health history and had been quite an athlete, running 30-40 miles a week, so this was a total and complete shock to us all. CPR was initiated by my son, a volunteer ski patrol member, a lifeguard, and myself. An AED was used. The Fire Department personnel arrived immediately after the successful cardioversion and transported my husband to the ER at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. The crew struggled to maintain a patent airway, as my husband was vomiting profusely throughout resusciataion efforts and the ambulance ride. I rode in the ambulance and noted that even though the siren and lights were used, vehicles on the road did not readily move. I was particularly impressed with the ambulance driver who stayed focused and got us safely to our destination. Steve was on a ventilator for a few days but eventually was able to breathe on his own despite significant lung involvement from the massive aspiration. A cardiac cath showed a 99% blockage of a major vessel, and he had a CABG done (the 6th case for Rockingham Memorial's new program). Later Steve was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General for an electro physiology study. On February 19th, Steve was discharged to home!!! He is recovering well and getting stronger every day. He has no memory of approximately 12 days surrounding his heart attack but is otherwise showing no significant cognitive loss.
LT Aaron Stroop called to check on us during the hospitalization and even stopped in to visit Steve at one point while he was in CCU. He indicated that feedback might be helpful for the personnel involved in treating my husband. As a healthcare provider myself, I understand that point and hope that this note will be uplifting.
We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all involved in saving my husband's life!!
